The arrival of the Milwaukee & Lacrosse Railroad in 1855 was the single most important economic event for early Hartford. It connected the village to larger markets, enabling the shipment of lumber, grain, and manufactured goods. The railroad also brought new residents and businesses. However, the line’s failure in 1861 caused a local mortgage crisis, forcing many landowners to sell their property at a loss. Despite this setback, the railroad remained a vital artery for Hartford’s growth, especially after the Chicago & Northwestern Railway later took over the line. Today, the Steam Locomotive Heritage Association preserves the historic Soo Line 1003 locomotive in Hartford, keeping the steam era alive.
